A BITTER row has erupted over plans to install the Scottish saltire at the nation’s most famous landmark – relegating the Union flag to second place for the first time in 404 years.

Ministers are being urged to fly the distinctive blue and white ensign from a 90ft flagpole at Edinburgh castle – to boost national pride and promote Scotland’s image abroad.

First Minister Alex Salmond’s SNP have been asked to give greater prominence to the standard. But the proposals caused deep divisions yesterday after it emerged the pennant would flutter from a platform towering 30ft above that of the Union flag.
